Eco Mandate

Prairie Sky School is an independent school in Regina founded on the belief that children have an innate sense of wonder in the world that can be fostered through nature-based learning.  Respect for nature is a strong and deep current that runs throughout the various child-inspired pedagogies that we embrace.  We use the term “Eco” inclusively to refer to the natural and ecological world as well as to human nature and the nature of a child. We are committed to making the world better for our children, and to teaching them how to make it better for the future. Our Eco mandate includes the following tenets:

  • To nourish children’s natural sense of wonder and joy of learning;

  • To use natural materials and supplies where possible (e.g., wood rather than plastic, wax crayons rather than markers; chalk boards rather than white boards);

  • To spend time outdoors and encourage a love of the natural world;

  • To honour the seasons and celebrate daily and yearly cyclical rhythms;
  • To promote a sense of environmental consciousness and responsibility (e.g., going on local field trips, understanding where food comes from);
  • To model healthy food choices and healthy lifestyles;
  • To teach in harmony with children’s natural developmental patterns;
  • To use nature as inspiration and as a teaching guide (e.g., to learn the Fibonacci sequence from a pinecone; aerial effects from a feather);
  • To recycle and compost, use renewable resources and encourage sustainability as much as possible;
  • To engage community in promoting the environment and going Green.
